Oasis is in the spotlight for their use of dynamic pricing, which allows ticket prices to increase while fans are waiting in the online queue to buy them (as well as after the initial on-sale). High demand = a surge in pricing, meaning two people can pay different prices for the exact same ticket. It’s a very complex and nuanced situation, and one that is now being investigated by the U.K. government.

• As much (deserved) heat as the ticketing platforms (Ticketmaster) have gotten over the years, Artists and their teams are the ones that actually activate dynamic pricing. But can you blame them?

• With the pennies many Artists make from streaming, the elimination of all live revenue during COVID, and a strained economy affecting things like merch cost and sales right now… touring is often the only way Artists can try to make a living.

  • NOTE: Yes I know things like brand partnerships and music snyc exist, but those are delicacies often only enjoyed by the music elite.

• Can’t Artists get rich off of streaming? Spotify pays artists between $0.003 and $0.005 per stream, and Apple Music pays $0.007- $0.01 per stream. So if your song is streamed a million times, you’d receive $3-5k from Spotify and/or $7-10k on Apple Music. So theoretically yes, but in reality for many… no.

• Even with music consumption rising, the revenue per stream rate continues to fall:

To make matters more complex, according to the RIAA mid-year report, streaming in the US, which attributes 38% of the global record music revenue, is close to reaching maximum capacity in terms of paying music subscribers. Growth figures have been in a constant free fall for the last 5 years.

• 2020: +14.4 million YoY

• 2021: +9.4 million YoY

• 2022: +7.9 million YoY

• 2023: +6.6 million YoY

• 2024: +2.5 million YoY

  YoY = Year over Year

The most frustrating part for Artists in all of this, is paid music subscription revenue actually increased +5.1% YoY (+$5.23B).

So if Artists aren’t getting paid more, then who is?

Kevin Shivers has won the 2024 Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players’ Choice Award. He is one of the nicest people in the entire music industry, evident in winning a highly respected peer-voted award. We had a chance to sit down with him last year. His advice to someone just starting out in the business?

Shivers: Just say yes. Somebody asks you to go to a show? Say yes. Somebody asks to go to dinner? Say yes. Your boss says we need somebody to move to London? Just go. You’re young and there is a lot of power in saying yes. Don't be afraid to fail.
