Getting laid off can feel like the ground disappearing beneath you. Our entire division at Live Nation (don’t hold it against me for working there) got furloughed during the Pandemic, and it was one of the worst days of my career.
I was first sad, then felt that life was unfair, then decided to use that pain as fuel. I bet on myself, started this newsletter, and decided to grow AvA from a meme page into what it is now.
You don’t need to get laid off to bet on yourself. But when something goes wrong, try and learn from it, and find any upside you can.
During the first episode of AvA LIVE last weekend, I sat down with the president of Sixteenth, RJ Larese, who has previously spent time at Paramount, Nickelodeon, Disney, ABC & others.

⭐ Social media apps are becoming even less social and more media
Apple Music signed an exclusive deal with TikTok to let users to stream a full song without leaving the app. The feature is creatively called ‘Play Full Song,’ and it is different to the ‘Add to Music App’ tool that allows fans to save music to their streaming platform of choice.
⭐ The world goes vertical
Google & Range Media are teaming up with the producers behind ‘The Bachelor’ and ‘American Idol’ for a new slate of microdramas. There is a ton of vertical slop out there, but this is a massive bet on the format.
⭐ YouTube’s ad revenue in 2025 exceeded Disney, NBC, Paramount, and WBD COMBINED with $40.4 billion vs. their collective $37.8 billion.
⭐ Netflix’s deal with Ben Affleck’s AI film start-up reportedly could end up reaching $600 million in all cash...
…and you’re about to see similar deals for every major streamer and studio out there.
⭐ Betting Big on The Oscars
Amount bet on the Oscars via betting platform prediction market Kalshi.
Kalshi:
2024: $2.3M
2025: $29.6M
2026: $57M
Prediction markets around entertainment are blowing up. But so is the insider trading risk.
MrBeast’s video editor recently got caught insider trading on Kalshi, fined $20k and kicked off the platform. That certainly won’t be a one-off. Even with Kalshi setting up a task force to police it, there are just too many people with direct knowledge on things like release dates, casting, or whether someone physically shows up to an event.
⭐ The Queen Returns
Nikki Glaser is officially set to return for her 3rd time hosting the Golden Globes in 2027. She now only sits behind Tina Fey & Amy Poehler (4) and Ricky Gervais (5) for most times hosting the event ever.
