📰 Plus TV series cancellations are down, Label report cards are in, and another stike on the horizon?

1) TV series cancellations are on a large downward trend since 2023’s re-formation massacre.
2023 was the year of the 2 major strikes, as well as a financial crisis for studios that started when the streaming boom slowed down. How many shows have been cancelled since?

2) Apple TV+ is undergoing a MASSIVE rebrand
Jk they just dropped the “+” from their name in a ““vibrant new identity” for Apple TV. Just don’t go full HBO Max/Max/HBO on us plz.
3) Who owns the Label world? A Q3 update
Republic Still Rules - Even before Taylor’s new album, Republic led the year with a 13.6% market share (up from 12.7% midyear) thanks to Morgan Wallen, Sabrina Carpenter, The Weeknd the KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack. That’s dominance without their biggest weapon.
Note: Republic encompasses Republic Records, Island Records, Mercury Records, Big Loud and indie distributor Imperial
Atlantic’s Major Glow-Up – Give Elliot Grainge his flowers. He gets heat for being a nepobaby but he’s delivering in a big way. The Warner-owned label jumped to 7.8% after pulling in 10K Projects (home to Trippie Redd). Even without that bump, they’d still post major gains off Cardi B, Twenty One Pilots, and Alex Warren.

UMG Still #1 – Universal’s empire slipped slightly to 35.9%. No surprise with Swift out of the window until Oct. 3. Expect that number to skyrocket once The Life of a Showgirl is fully counted.
Note: UMG encompasses Republic, Interscope Geffen, Capitol, Def Jam, Island, Big Loud, Virgin & many more.
Sony Quietly Climbing – With Columbia, RCA, and Alamo all up, Sony’s total share hit 26.7%. A Bad Bunny bump helped solidifying it as the only major that grew year-over-year without a Taylor-level release.
The indies dropped from 15.85% to 14.94%.

4) Looks like Broadway musicians may be on strike soon.

AMC Networks and CEO Kristan Dolan’s decide to extend her contract through 2028 for another 3 years. The deal has a handful of incentives and planned salary increases, and the full breakdown is a very interesting read.
Paramount’s Theatrical Distribution Chief Chris Aronson has left the company. He served in the role for 6 years, and this was indeed also a byproduct of their merger with Skydance. Shocker.
AWAL promoted Arif Mahmud from VP of Business Affairs, to SVP of the same title and to becoming a member of the General Counsel. He’s been with the company since 2017, so it’s always good to see an internal W.

Personal note:
I write this newsletter on Beehiiv and it honestly changed my life.
When I started AvA, I hid behind memes and anonymity. Beehiiv gave me the tools and confidence to step out, build a real audience, and turn this thing into my full-time job.
So if you’re creative, or work with people who are, check out the event below. It’s going to be educational, fun, and probably the best excuse you’ll have this month to finally start that idea sitting in your Notes app.
The Future of the Content Economy
beehiiv started with newsletters. Now, they’re reimagining the entire content economy.
On November 13, beehiiv’s biggest updates ever are dropping at the Winter Release Event.
For the people shaping the next generation of content, community, and media, this is an event you won’t want to miss.

A weekly series from Dominik, who leads our Strategy, Growth and Product.
This weekend was my Super Bowl. Mat Belloni had Ari Emanuel the super agent of Entourage fame on The Town.
We learned that Ari is still personally repping a handful of key clients (oh just 25 no big deal) including Mark Wahlberg and Jonah Hill. Ari and Mark (his longtime partner) are starting a new company Mari (yes it's Mark + Ari) name is something…BUT more importantly the company will be an aggregator (large scale buyer) of live events business, they already own iconic events such as the Frieze Art Fair and tennis tournaments.
Ari is betting that with the rise of AI (we have talked wayyy too much ai recently) live events will surge.
There is a lesson in here for us all, when everyone zigs there will inevitably be a counter reaction think longform ➡️ shortform or Casey Neistat youtube vlogs ➡️ highly produced social video like Brooklyn Coffee Shop.
What is next and how can you positioned to win?

👋 See you back here on Wednesday
