🐝 The Weekly Buzz:

This weekend is the first time in almost 2 years that 4 films have grossed over $20M:

• 1. Sinners ($45M)

• 2. Revenge of the Sith ($25M)

• 3. The Accountant 2 ($24.5M)

• 4. Minecraft ($22.7M)

Sinners continues to be a rocket ship at the box office, and only dropped off 6% from its opening weekend, the smallest drop in ANY genre since “Avatar” in 2009. Simply put, writer-director Ryan Coogler has delivered yet another hit. His past films have grossed over $2B worldwide including Black Panther ($1.3B), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ($859M), Creed ($174M), Creed III ($276M), Fruitvale Station ($17M) and now Sinners ($163M and counting), yet has faced scrutiny for the Sinners deal terms:

• Coogler had creative control over the final edited version of the movie aka “final right cuts”

• He received a percentage of the gross income from the first dollar earned at the box office, without having to wait for profitability aka first-dollar gross).

• Coogler will retain full ownership of the film after 25 years. This was a huge sticking point for many studios, who said no, but Warner Bros. agreed and Coogler has another hit

Spotify announced their Q1 earnings and added record number of users in the first quarter with Monthly active users (MAUs) growing 10% to 678 million. They also announced payouts to podcasters for the first time: $100 million in Q1 2025. Latin American and “Rest of World” continue to fuel the growth, and parts of Europe and Latin America are rewarded with more price hikes!

YouTube ad revenues jumped 10.3% in Q1 of this year to nearly $9 billion. Its Premium and Music Premium services now have 125 million paying subscribers, +25 million over the past 12 months. Full breakdown is here.

Ever wonder what happens when an Artist goes over their allotted time at a major fest? Travis Scott’s 3 minutes of extra performance time cost Coachella producer Goldenvoice $20k, or the cost of 4 speciality mixed drinks at the bar. The penalty is $20k for the first 5 min, then $1k a minute past that. When have we seen this happened before?

• 2009 - Paul McCartney - 54 minutes over - $54K fine

• 2022 - $61K in fines (Included Stagecoach)

• 2023 - Bad Bunny (2 min over on W1 and 25 min on W2), Frank Ocean (25 min on W1 obviously), Calvin Harris (22 min), and the trio of Skrillex, Fred Again.. and Four Tet (16 min) - $168K fine

• 2024 - Lana del Rey - 13 minutes over - $28k fine

Tick, tick, tick. Bill Owens, only the third top executive in the 57-year history of ‘60 Minutes,’ resigned last week. Shortly after, correspondent Scott Pelley called out parent company Paramount on-air over trying to appease the Trump administration as they look to complete a merger (which the administration must approve). Slurpee anyone? Live Nation's When We Were Young, the Vegas pop-punk & emo fest, has sold its naming rights to 7-Eleven “to celebrate the first place every Millennial went after getting high for the time” (the quote is made up). 7-Eleven will also have large scale activations at Rolling Loud and Gov Ball, both owned by Live Nation.

Deeper dive: Live Nation’s adjusted income from sponsorship hit $764 million in 2024, up 13% from 2023’s $675 million and more than 3x the $207 million it brought in a decade ago.
