🐝 The Weekly Buzz:

The SAG Awards were Sunday night and featured some upsets that leaves the Oscars (this Sunday night) wide open in key categories:

• Anora left empty handed, but still has the best odds (65%) of an Oscar win for ‘Best Picture.’

• Conclave edged out the above film and multiple others for ‘Best Cast.’ It’s odds for ‘Best Picture’ jumped from 6% to 23% following the major upset.

• Wicked had a leading 5 nominations, and won 0 awards on the night. It seems to be getting the Barbie treatment: Box office smash with no hardware to show.

• Timothée Chalamet won his first major award for his role in A Complete Unknown in the ‘Best Actor’ category. He looked shocked (as did we). His odds jumped 10% to win the Oscar for Best Actor, but Adrien Brody remains the favorite.

• On the TV side, Only Murders in the Building edged out shows like The Bear for ‘Best Comedy Ensemble.’ Martin Short missing his first SAG Award Win with Covid was the most Martin Short moment possible.

Live Nation’s CEO Michael Rapino confirms they’ve been in talks with Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon about pre-sale access for super premium tier subscribers. More price hikes soon!

Live Nation dropped their 2024 Earnings. Highlights below:

• 151 million fans attended shows in 2024 (+4% YoY)

• Live Nation hosted 55,000 events. That’s 150 per day aka hundreds of stressed out assistants chasing deposits and unsigned contracts.

• 2024 revenue rose +3% YoY to $23 billion

• Q4 total revenue declined -2% YoY 

• The total ‘24 revenue from their concert business was up 2% YoY, but down 6% YoY in Q4.

• Ticketmaster, Live Nation’s totally-not-a-monopoly evil twin, sold 637 million tickets (+2.7% YoY) with revenue hitting $2.99B (+0.9% YoY)

Takeaway: While numbers continue to rise for the Entertainment giant, the growth actually slowed compared to 2023 vs. 2022 numbers. It’s a macro issue as growth across the live entertainment space is slowing down since the post-pandemic boom. 2025 is still set to be a record year for Live Nation though, so even with constricting growth, live music ain’t going anywhere anytime soon.

More than 1,000 artists including Damon Albarn of the Gorillaz, Kate Bush, and more contributed to a silent album in protest to the UK’s plans to loosen AI copyright laws. The proposed UK law would require Artists to “opt-out” vs. “opt-in” to AI developers using their content available on the internet to develop and train their models. All profits from the album are going to be donated to the charity Help Musicians. Read more.
