🐝 The Weekly Buzz

1) Netflix rarely does theatrical releases, but they brought their massive ‘Kpop Demon Hunters’ hit to 1,700 theaters for a “sing-a-long,” pulling in an estimated (they don’t report grosses) $18 million to $20 million over the weekend.

Why it matters:

  • It’s the first box office win for Netflix in its 18-year history.

  • It’s closing in on the most-watched English-language Netflix film of all time.

    • Number 1? Red Notice w/ The Rock, Ryan Reynolds & Gal Gadot.

  • AMC Theatres refused to show it. Old grunges are alive and well..

  • Sony made a fixed profit of ~$20 million (it cost $100 million to make) due to a distribution deal where Netflix owns the film's future rights and sequels.

    • We most certainly will see a Billion $$ franchise spun off of it. Huge win for Netflix. Lot’s of money on the table for Sony

I declared this:

Am I a big dumb idiot?

2) YouTube names Bandsintown as their ‘exclusive provider of concert listings.’

3) UTA signs John Legend in a deal that includes representation for his production company Get Lifted Film Co, the studio that brought Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling’s ‘La La Land’ to life.

4) BMI’s royalty rate is rising by nearly 24% with US radio broadcasters. BMI declared it their “largest rate increase ever,” jumping from 1.78% to 2.2%, with a reported 85% of the earnings being distributed to songwriters and music publishers.

5) The Matthew Perry Foundation is teaming up with Tyler Childers to be the main sponsor of his recovery based music festival. The foundation is paying for the housing of 400 volunteers on site, along with 500 additional day volunteers from recovery facilities across Appalachia. Hell yea.

🏃 Industry Moves

  1. Big Loud Records promotes 3 execs, and hires 3 more. Big moves at Big Loud.

  2. The Recording Academy names Ross Golan Co-Chair of Songwriters and Composers Wing.

  3. Warner Music’s Emerging Markets and M&A Exec, Alfonso Perez Soto, leaves the company after 20 years. His final words to Warner were “we will go on different paths… and see you down the road.”

🔦 Moment of the Week

The Jonas Brothers brought JP Saxe out during their show in his hometown just weeks after he vulnerably shared why he had to cancel his tour.

📚 AvA Recs  🎧

Channels with Peter Kafka had ESPN boss, Jimmy Pitaro, on to discuss the launch of their enhanced streaming service and their, well, hopes and dreams surrounding the new offering.

Bottom Line, fingers crossed we only get new customers and no one cancels cable. Lets have our cake and eat it too? 🍰

And finally a trend: News media alumni leaving (yes nothing new) to start highly produced youtube channels.

Example: Dynamo who creates highly produced business interest shows like Business Explains The World where they explore topics like why millennials ruined rollercoasters or why a violin costs 14 mil.

Takeaway: Lots of opportunity to get involved in these new ventures for rising professionals.
