Saturday Night Live celebrated 50 years over the weekend. The list of celebrities who returned for the event is as long as my boss’ call log. Tom Hanks, Sabrina Carpenter, Dave Chappelle, Miley Cyrus, Bad Bunny, Paul McCartney, Scarlett Johansson, and Adam Sandler (who gave a shoutout to nepo-babies ehhhh interns).
Universal Music Group acquired a majority stake in Japanese music company ‘A-Sketch.’ Japan is notably the world’s second largest recorded music market. Its market is unique due to their affinity for physical music formats, particularly CDs, reflecting their traditional consumptions habits compared to the rest of the world. The top 10?

Spotify is prepping a “super fan” tier that will have early access to tickets and an AI remix tool. New day, new price increase as streaming platforms, and the music industry in general, continues to chase super fans. Full story here.
HYBE (The K-Pop giant) has launched a new AI text-to-voice tool that it says can generate a voice character in just 10 seconds. Thanks, I hate it.
Need a vacation? Well I can’t help with that, but you can live vicariously through White Lotus who saw 2.4M viewers during their Season 3 premiere night, a 57% increase over Season 2, and 155% higher than Season 1.
‘Captain America: Brave New World’ grossed $192 million during it’s opening weekend. Marvel has seen underwhelming performances across the board since ‘Avengers: End Game’ released, but their over-performance puts a win back on the board for the company more obsessed with sequels than a CEO hiring his son.
During the pandemic, original films had a huge audience, but the overall viewership has since dropped by a third. As Netflix, Apple TV+, and others reduce their spending on original movies, studios are focusing more on theatrical releases, which challenges the idea that streaming is the future of all movie distribution, according to Luminate.
The BAFTA Film Awards were this past week. ‘Conclave’ (Best Film) and ‘The Brutalist’ (Best Director and Actor) won big. Full list here. Interestingly enough, Conclave only has a 9% chance to win Best Picture at The Oscars, with Anora (70%) and The Brutalist (18%) leading the way.
Kendrick Lamar continues to rewrite hip-hop history
The first rapper (and just the 9th artist) ever to reach 100 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
The first rap act ever to have 3 albums in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart at the same time. Taylor Swift was the last act in general to do so (duh). The last male act? Price.
Netflix finally broke their silence on the Emilia Pérez movie’s scandal with… “what a bummer.” The company’s Chief Content Officer is said to be reevaluating its vetting process in regard to talent social media accounts. Hope they don’t look at mine (kidding Netflix hit me up).
