Spotify and Universal Music Group have agreed on a new deal that includes a direct licensing agreement for the US and multiple other territories, as well as the roadmap for a pricer “Superfan” tiers. Read more here.

In more Spotify news, the streaming giant paid out $10 Billion to the music industry in 2024, up from $9 Billion in 2023, which is {checks notes} $10 Billion more than my bonus this year. 50% of that was generated by Indies. Full Q4 earnings coming next week.

We wrote about Netflix’ record-breaking earnings last week (and price hike coming), and now they’ve declared good is not good enough.

• Their content budget will increase a full $1 Billion in 2024 to $18 Billion in 2025.

• Netflix stock hit an all time high and is now worth more than Disney, Paramount, Comcast & Fox combined.

• There are speculations (although very much rumors) there may be a future jump into the music streaming world. Please god no my credit card can’t take another subscription.

Bruno Mars, who has not put out a solo album since 2016, is the first artist ever to reach 150 million monthly listeners on Spotify. Imagine how much higher that number would be if you took into account the attendees at weddings and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs being forced to listen to Uptown Funk. Mars has been on an unprecedented run this past year with “Apt,” “Die With A Smile,” and now "Fat Juicy & Wet” (gross name).

Deadline broke down the slate of films at Sundance as all eyes on are 2027 and a relocation of the iconic film festival. The potential spots?

1. Utah bid of Salt Lake City/Park City

2. Boulder, Colorado

3. Cincinnati, Ohio (this will be a huge issue for those who go just to post their Après-ski aesthetic on socials)

AEG’s ticketing platform AXS is set to feature fingerprint and facial recognition software for future event access. Black Mirror vibes.

Timothée Chalamet continued both hosted and performed on SNL this weekend. James Blake backed him for the music portion, and they unearthed a few Bob Dylan deep cuts to further market his role in “A Complete Unknown.”

Continuing the conversation around Hollywood postponements and cancellations… Bad Bunny is the most recent Hot Ones guest to give up part way through the show. The list before him includes DJ Khaled, Ice Spice, and Ricky Gervais.
