The Weekly Buzz:

CAA has sued Range Media Partners for “stealing confidential information” and acting as “an unlicensed talent agency built on deceit.”

Let’s break that down a bit:

The first complaint is over the theft of confidential information:

• Range Media Partners was launched by Peter Micelli (a former CAA literary Agent) in 2020.

• They now represent talent across music, film, sports and TV, and that talent includes Bradley Cooper, Keira Knightley, Tom Hardy, M Night Shymalan, Michael Bay, Jack Harlow, PartyNextDoor, Midland & many more.

• The lawsuit claims that Mircelli recruited other CAA agents (Jack Whigham, David Bugliari, Michael Cooper, and Mick Sullivan) who posed as “loyal CAA members sitting in confidential CAA meetings” while at the same time “carrying out a scheme (launching Range Media Partners) designed to give Range an unlawful competitive edge.”

• They were allegedly communicating via Telegram, a private messaging app, to avoid being detected by CAA. Can’t wait for this Netflix doc…

• A bit of irony here? CAA was formed by five agents at the William Morris Agency (now WME) who decided to start the now powerrhouse agency over a dinner in 1975.

The second complaint is in regards to a potential violation of the California Talent Agencies Act, which requires talent agents be licensed by the California Labor Commissioner.

• The CAA complaint claims that Range Media Partners is “acting as a talent agency but labeling itself a management company.” Simply put, management companies cannot legally be talent agencies as well. The CAA complaint claims that an email from 2020 from a current Range Partner “suggests Range was looking to exploit the ‘gray area’ between talent agents and managers.”

• CAA also alleges that Range exploited a new WGA code of conduct, which “prohibits agencies from owning a significant stake in a production company or taking fees from producers to package them into projects.” The suit alleges that Range got around that rule by claiming to be a management firm and not an agency.

• According to Variety, “the suit notes that A+E Networks acquired a stake in Range in early 2022, and said it would partner on scripted TV projects set up by Range — an arrangement that would be prohibited under the WGA code if Range were considered an agency.”

In other news, Spotify’s Global Head of Music is set to leave after 5 years with the streaming giant. Jeremy Erlich is said to be embarking on “his own entrepreneurial journey,” and he will slowly phase out of the company in the coming months. More on that here.
