🐝 The Weekly Buzz:

A24 is shutting down their documentary division. In the past the non-fiction arm of the company has worked on docs with Steven McQueen, Stephen Curry, and more. Although “only” 5 staffers have been laid off (any layoff is hard to read about) this is a major indicator that the traditional documentary model of “pitch —> fund —> create” is collapsing.

‘Lilo & Stitch’ soared to a $341 million debut in the global box office. This was the second biggest debut of the year behind ‘A Minecraft Movie,’ and it also ranks as the third-best start for ticket sales by a Disney’s live-action reboot. Disney is back on track after their ‘Snow White’ box office flop.

Mission Impossible also landed on a high with $190 million globally. The most impressive part about this feat? Hayley Atwell was 8 and ½ months pregnant while filming the fight scenes.

Neon, who was once thought to be the “little sibling of A24” has produced the last 6 Palme D’or winners at Cannes. The award this year was given to ‘It Was Just An Accident,’ and in years prior the list of winners has included ‘Anora’ and ‘Parasite’ – both of which went on to win Best Picture at The Oscars.

Billie Eilish, SZA, Beyoncé, Eminem, Post Malone, Becky G and Gracie Abrams were the big winners from the AMAs last night. Full list here.

The All-American Rejects are taking the internet by storm. No this is not a headline from 2008. The band has been playing small pop-up shows in bowling alleys, backyards, and living rooms, and it may be the most brilliant marketing campaign of 2025. Gaming continues to go mainstream. Amazon ordered docuseries on first-ever Esports World Cup.

The California Film Credit Expansion has hit a snag in court. The number was touted to expand the program from $330 million to $750 million, but the specific increase has now been deleted from the record entirely. Things could change, but this is seemingly a major step backwards.

Billy Joel cancels tour due to brain condition. Our prayers are out to Billy and his family.
